The Art Of Mads Peitersen

We were very lucky today to be able to give you some high-res versions of the popular bio-mechanical art from Concept Artist Mads Peitersen. Mads has a background in gaming, having worked for IO Interactive as an artist and level designer.

We asked him why he decided upon the controllers as subjects and the process he went through to create them. Mads had this to say:

I painted them with the idea that these gadgets are becoming so advanced and cool today that we almost treat them as if they were alive. That the gamers in a way become attached to them . After you have had your Xbox360 or PS3 for while you slowly begin to see yourself as connected to these brands or gadgets. They almost become an extension of yourself or your hands. Its not to talk about fanboy relations or say that one is better than the other. It is the feeling that we connect and attach to these machines individually.

The metaphor is that a really rather simple and very dead gadget gives people a feeling of being more present, more alive. An they relate in larger degree with these gadgets almost on a par with a pet or a friend! Even punish them if the fail in a game. As an old gamer I know all these little habits all too well Haha.

With that in mind I painted a little series of gadgets (including the Iphone4), as anatomical and living creatures. Tried to get their bodies to fit and match the buttons and functions properly. To further play on the feeling that there is something alive and real going on behind the plastic cover.

I draw them in hand, and clean them up on different layers of god old fashioned paper. This is to keep track on all the various stuff going on in there, as it quickly became quite challenging to navigate around in. Scan them in, and give them the full workaround in Photoshop. Actually the Iphone4 is the artpiece I’ve spend most time on ever. But it sure was a lot of fun :)

Mads’ deviantArt page can be found here. Be sure to keep tabs on him for future works of epic-awesomeness.
