Gears Of War 3

If 4th of April 2011 seems like a long way off, that’s because it is. It never felt further away than when they guys at epic showed off a pretty damn complete-looking Gears Of War 3 at E3 this year. I thought I could just put it out of my mind until the time to release has drawn a little closer, but I can’t. So, in lieu of that, lets re-cap on some of the reasons I’m excited about this release.

I’ll admit right off the bat that stylistically, this game hasn’t changed much from what I’ve seen. But I’m firmly of the belief that “if it aint broke, don’t fix it” – I only have to point you in the direction of the debacle which is the latest Prince of Persia game. Saying that, they seem to have gone for a more out-doors’y feel to this one, with most of the screenshots being set in the sunlight from what I can tell.

There have been a few minor tweaks to combat which looked good in their single player demo’s but which will undoubtedly prove to be tonnes of fun in the multiplayer side of the game. The bayonet charge looks like it can kill an enemy outright and might give players an interesting new method of moving quickly from cover to cover but we’re assuming that it’ll be restricted to one particular weapon, similar to the chainsaw attacks. There have been hints towards a number of interesting new weapons, with one new weapon confirmed for definite, the sawn-off double barrelled shotgun, which will make welcome new addition to the gears arsenal.

The most highly touted change has to be the new “Beast Mode” multiplayer gametype, in which players will be given the opportunity to assume control of a selection of hitherto unplayable enemy classes. The Kantus, for example, will now be fully playable and will serve as a healer for the rest of the team, where as the larger Butchers have the ability to pick up and throw cars at their enemies causing the giblets to undoubtedly fly.

Last and, well probably least, is the news that ageing hip hop one-time star and has-bin actor Ice-T will be voicing the character of Griffin. Hopefully I should only have to say this once – stay out of my games, you talentless money-grubbing fucks! ALL OF YOU!!
